So, the 2009 season FINALLY begins!!!
Here are your 2009 Bullfrogs:

 1  Tom Earing
 2  AC Earing
 3  Jared Davis
 7  Justin Smith
 8  Jeff Quesnell
09 AJ Arango
10 Dan Smith
11 Cullen Wilson
12 Anthony Nelson
15 Andy Weliver
21 JD Campbell
22 Jeremy Moss
31 Dave Hawkins
33 Nick Brown
36 Rob Allen

A few returning faces: AC, Jeff, Cullen, and Jeremy, with a possible late-season arrival of Tom.

This season, we started with a rough start against the Yankees, having only a roster of 7 players... but then began a bare-bottom spanking of the Clovers (yes, JD's former team) before the Mother Nature stepped in and let them slip away.

This year's team may prove to be a more mature, balanced and stronger team than the 2008 roster, and the first REAL game of the season (in this writer's opinion) will be this weekend when the Bullfrogs play a split (9am/4pm) double header!

Bullfrogs Fall Flat
Some imposter team showed up in orange uniforms this weekend!

The made the Clovers look like a high-powered hitting team... well, two homers with bases loaded will do that!  Too bad the bases were loaded with BBs, HBPs, and ROEs!

Not to mention, the Clovers got away with SO many extra bases due to errors...

But it wasn't a fluke because the same imposter team in orange allowed 12 runs in the first inning against the Bandits!

"Its like that team in black isn't even trying; they keep walking to first base!"  one onlooker reported.

Bullfrogs Manager, AC Earing had this to say after the game: "er, eh, theeba, theeba, gurgle, duh..."  which this reporter interprets as such: we have to start getting hits, not swinging at junk pitches, make less errors by stopping the ball with our bodies if not with our gloves, and not leave so many base-runners on!

Stay tuned for what happens with the guys in orange and green!  Next week: Pueblo!
Bullfrogs put honus on pitching staffUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Too many pitches, not enough PUT OUTS!!!
Justin Smith has been a force on the mound... the big unit lefty has picked the team up with incredible strike-outs... but there is simply TOO MUCH pressure on the young strong pitcher to do all the work!  Defensively, the Bullfrogs have overcome major deficits to come back and take the lead on a number of occasions, but key errors have led to undefendable walks, and too many times, a blown lead.  Justin threw 121 pitches in just 5 1/3 innings, fanning 13 Clovers, but walking (or hitting) 11 of them.

Some offensive highlights of the game include: EVERY batting Bullfrog got at least ONE hit, as well, Rob Allen got 3 RBIs on the day, hitting 2 for 4.  Not to be unmentioned, Anthony "The Pickle" Nelson earned a stolen base the HARD way in a series of at least 7 throws (Clovers trying to pick him off) that resulted in a beautiful head-first slide into third base!

Troublesome news in the Bullfrogs front office, the Bullfrogs will be without spry and agile JD Campbell for the next 3 games as he faces a suspension.  Bullfrogs manager AC Earing had this to say, "...our team is more about getting to play the sport of baseball than it is about psychological trash-talking or outrageous outbursts."  "We are here with our families, and out to match skills and luck with other teams as they spend their Sundays with their families."  "I hope this is the end of unneccessary distractions... GO BULLFROGS!"

Next week, the REAL split double-header with a 9am game and a 4pm game.

split double headers SUCK!!!
Bullfrogs this week are represented by Nick Brown.  Nick was hit by two pitches, and got a split eyebrow off of a screaming line drive at third base.  Who knows how many stitches, and what flavor of anesthetic, but Nick put a huge amount of effort into the game this weekend, but still left bloody.  Just like the Bullfrogs.

Though the first game ended in a tie, I know I know how does a baseball game end in a tie, but take away ONE inning of 3 unearned runs (by the Charros) on three key errors, and the Bullfrogs outpitched, outplayed, outhit the Charros... two items of particular note, AJ Arango hit his first homer EVER, and it was a solo shot over left-center field.  As well, Andy Weliver delivered on a two-run shot over right-center field, gaining 4 RBIs in that game.  Another groovy hit was by Dan Smith who put a crazy hooking spin on a line drive down third base line (remember, he's a lefty) to bring the Bullfrogs back into their deserved winning position.

Pitching-wise, though AC gave up a pretty large number of hits, the Bullfrogs kept the  Charros to 15 stranded runners on the day.  This writer chalks it up to "cool under pressure" composure!

Next week: bye week, aka Memorial Day Weekend: no games.  May 31st, the Bullfrogs host the Hondos at El Pomar... then, June 7th, the good-guys host the Bombers in Pueblo at Central HS... this writer has a special place in his heart for disdain for the Bombers, and hopes that the Bullfrogs can get back to back wins!

Go Bullfrogs!
aren't ALL losses tough?!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
And the trash was a flyin!
Not to perpetuate the trash-talk, but the NUMBER ONE team faced the last placed team, and the score margin wasn't that great... nor were the hits... nor were the excessive number of errors committed... BY the NUMBER ONE team!  Maybe number two would be a better title.

Actually, what a great day for baseball!  Passionate and aggressive play ALL DAY in Pueblo with many MANY close calls on the field from first base all the way around to the plays at the plate!

In the end, small ball won it for the Bombers.  bloop and bash with a lot of walking.  6 of their 16 runs were earned by the Bombers, 3 of the Bullfrogs' 5 were earned.

The scoreboard didn't reflect the close match-up of the day, but that has been the story for the men in orange and green this season.

Expect, with the improvement of their bats and meshing as a team, the Bullfrogs to turn a corner and start accumulating some wins!

not Pueblo AGAIN!!!
So two NON-Pueblo teams faced off in Pueblo again this week! The Sox traveling from Canon City and the Bullfrogs clashed as the first game opened up with a splendid display of hitting by the Bullfrogs. AC Earing, having never hit an out of the park home-run in a game, cranked a shot over right field earning not only his first homer, but also his first grand slam! Later in the inning, he was wiped out while making a tag on a ghost... because the field umpire couldn't conceive how a baserunner could run into a fielder's glove and actually be out WHILE the fielder is in the air, momentum quickly changed direction the wrong way! A smart decision to bring in the ACE who shut down the Bandit hitting machine, along with some seeing-eye dog calls by the officiating crew, and Earing's salami quickly diminished into thin air! Just like the ghost he tagged instead of the Sox' baserunner, I guess. But wait, there's more! The second game was full of action too. Did you know that umpires can make line-up changes? They can't, but they can sure complain to ONE team about getting hit by foul balls or wild pitches... even though they get hit by BOTH teams' pitchers. Crikey! Maybe it was the heat, maybe the orange of the Bullfrogs' uniforms bothered their eyes, but a LOT of calls sure seemed to go the way of the Sox in BOTH games. But, winning and losing doesn't come down to officiating... unless the New England Patriots or Detroit Red Wings are involved, but those are other sports... a few bad calls, a few missed calls, MAYBE they impact the score a little bit or maybe they impact momentum. BUT, when it comes down to it, the game over-all and the mental toughness to work past bad calls both belong to the team! The Bullfrogs, who started the season with only 3 returning players from last year, have grown into an amalgamation of personality and perseverance. While some teams are swapping players or trying to "sell tickets" with their awesomeness, the Bullfrogs exemplify recreation baseball in southern Colorado. They are a team that works together and gets along. They are a family who shows up week in and week out with a whole generation of future Bullfrogs in tow. They are group of individuals who are improving every day and with every opportunity. They are a team of guys aged 19 to 46 in a league where the top rated teams are comprised mostly of guys who should be playing in college (or recently did) or a few even in AAA pro-ball. This season has been a tough one so far, but there are some wins on the horizon for men in orange and green. Next week, the Bullfrogs are hosted by the Pueblo Demons for their FIRST game in Pueblo involving a Pueblo team. The Demons, recently sans a few big-name players who are adding to the "awesomeness" of the widely beloved Bombers, beat up on the Bullfrogs earlier in the season including spilling blood at the hot corner. But, this time, the Bullfrogs have more than 7 players, are hitting well, and have the savvy of a contention-worthy ball club! So, it should make for an EXCITING match up! Go Bullfrogs!

Second Win of the Season
Let's see here: Dan went 2/3 with a double Justin went 5/5 with 2 doubles AND Travis threw 50-60 pitches in 4 innings, and surrendered only TWO walks and 5 hits! Not to mention, his first win and the team's second. Across the league, statistically, Justin is also commanding respect on the mound with 71 strike-outs, second only behind the Brewers' Nick McCann! The Bullfrogs get their second win against a skeleton crew of the Pueblo Demons who recently lost some key players who were assimilated by another team. The Pueblo Demons were reduced to 8 players for the start of the game against the Bullfrogs. Ironically enough, the same was the case for the Bullfrogs' loss to the Demons earlier in the season, except that the Bullfrogs had only 7 Bullfrogs and one Yankee... If memory serves, there was another team on a nearby field with 13+ players, but couldn't spare any of their pillaged, borrowed, taken, players to contribute to the competitive graces of the league... In that game, the Bullfrogs were beat pretty badly. As in this last week's game, the Bullfrogs delivered a good walloping! The names of some of the teams in this league are pretty classic. A couple others are creative, but one team in particular could be a little more creative, and this writer thinks that next season, they should be called 'The Borg!!' "resistance is futile... you will be assimilated!" There is no game for the Fourth of July weekend, and the good guys will get to spend the rest of their season playing in Colorado Springs! The remaining games (at El Pomar) are: July 12: Yankees AT Bullfrogs 4pm July 19: Bandits AT Bullfrogs 12:30 Bullfrogs AT Bandits 4pm July 26: Hondos AT Bullfrogs 12:30 Go Bullfrogs!

Justin Smith throws 243 pitches!
What are the Bullfrogs thinking?  Their ACE throws a complete game AND closed another?  Clearly, they are putting too much pressure and are relying too much on the mighty left arm of Smith!  When asked for comment after the game, manager AC Earing had this to say, "Our Bullpen is underdeveloped and with our defense making key errors, our starting rotation is overburdened!"  He later when on to say that he'd re-enter the rotation and work more of the bullpen sooner than he has, attributing most of the losses to an overworked pitching staff.

However, one highlight of the Bandits double-header is one well-improved Nick Brown!  His numbers pre split-face and his number after would lead young players to believe that once you've taken one off the dome, your play improves and so does your hitting!  Brown's .258 avg doesn't reflect his recent performance at the plate... if he keeps this up, he'll be into the double-digits by the end of the season!

Another Smith of note is Dan Smith, he hit two doubles and racked up a pair of RBIs in the effort.

The Bullfrogs technically finish the season against the Hondos, who are traditionally plagued by shenanigans.  If the Bullfrogs stay cool and composed, especially with the high caliber of their bats of late, then they should come away with a win!  Also, TECHNICALLY, the Bullfrogs have a make-up game against the Yankees, but we'll see about how the schedule plays out.  One thing is certain, expect a good showing in the playoffs from the Bullfrogs!

End of the regular season...
Hello Bullfrog Fans!  (and secret wannabe Bullfrogs from other teams)

First things first... This week was a great week for the development of the Bullfrogs!  Noe Mendoza came through in a CLUTCH situation, with the game on the line, he ripped a double scoring tow runners and allowing the Bullfrogs to come from behind and WIN over the obviously season-worn Hondos.  Not to mention, Justin Smith got to hit a homer OUT OF THE PARK, as did Nick Brown whose hitting matriculated today with his solo homerun shot in the second inning!

Now, the season in quick review.

Justin Smith pitched 58 of the Bullfrogs' 130 innings... 44.6% of the innings pitched.  As well, the Bullfrogs' pitching staff struck out 141 other team batters, where as the hitters of the Bullfrogs only K'd 128 times... that is a strike-out differential of .476 and anything under .500 is GOOD!

The Bullfrogs were 182 of 525 (team BA .347) with 42 of those hits going for extra bases (241 total bags) making our team slugging % .459!  Half of the Bullfrogs hit for over .300 and EVERYBODY with 30+ plate appearances hit over .200!

Looking back on the season, a few little tweaks could have made the difference in the Bullfrogs' record, but a manager can be proud of the over-all team improvement that occurred!  Not only did many individual players improve defensively and offensively, but the team as a whole came together to create a solid team dynamic!  In this league, there is a lot of trading, and team jumping, and lack of loyalty, and only a few teams can claim having a dynamic like that of the Bullfrogs!  That is something to be proud of and its something to buid upon!

Now, off to the play-offs...

Go Bullfrogs!!!

Bullfrogs win round one!
JD Campbell got the start, but didn't complete 5 innings, so by Major League rules, he gets no decision.  Coming into the game with a pretty decent lead, Justin Smith gets the win!  Its his first win with the Bullfrogs and its about time considering his great pitching all season without a "W" on the books!

Pitching:

Campbell:  60 pitches thrown in 4 innings.
                 7 BB, 0 K, 4 R, 2 Earned, 4.5 ERA

Smith, J:   86 pitches thrown in 5 innings.
                2 BB, 9 K, 5 R, 2 Earned, 3.6 ERA

Hitting:

Arango: 2/5, R, K

Smith, D: 2/4, 2B, R, K, BB, SB, RBI

Smith, J: 2/4, 2R, HBP, SB, RBI

Earing: 0/2, 2BB

Weliver: 3/4, 3B, R, SB, RBI

Allen: 1/3, FC, R, 2K, RBI

Brown: 0/3, R, K, BB

Lindner: 0/3, R, K, BB, SB

Wilson: 2/4, 2B, R, K, 2RBI

Mendoza: 2/4, 2B, 2R, RBI

Campbell: 2/3, 2R, BB, SB, 2RBI

"This is the most somber victory ever!" said Campbell after the game.  Maybe because the Bullfrogs usually play much more dramatically... maybe because they established a lead early and maintained... maybe because it was hotter than hades in Pueblo.  To play a game in the lead in this league and maintain poise takes a LOT of concentration!  Maybe the Bullfrogs were worn out physically AND mentally.  Who knows, but what we know is that the Bullfrogs won a big game!

The Bullfrogs will face the Charros, who lost to the Demons by a margin of one, on Sunday in Pueblo.  The Charros will be looking for redemption, where as the Bullfrogs will be riding the orange momentum train.  It should be a good game considering in the regular season, the Charros and the Bullfrogs split.

Sunday Aug 9th: Bullfrogs AT Charros, Pueblo, 12:30 game time.
